Research
I generally start out with desk research by finding and putting together inspiration in a moodboard. This can be from projects in similar design domains or something which would be relevant to the concept.

The Disney method or mind maps are helpful when brainstorming ideas. To communicate ideas I sketch as I think it is easier to discuss with visuals. When a concrete idea has been established I start making either a one-pager or wireframes depending on the idea.
By thinking about the design goals and making a flowchart I try to discover the minimal viable product (NVP). With an NVP in mind I start programming a low-fidelity digital prototype. This gives me an idea of how the idea would work in a system.
Doing an expert test often helps identify the most obvious issues or bugs in the prototype. Depending on what the tests need to inform on I do interviews, think aloud tests, A/B tests or gather telemetry data.
When tests have been conducted on the prototype the data from the tests are organized based on the goal of the tests and by looking at commonalities in the data problems with the prototype are identified.
